Have you ever read William Gibson´s Idoru?

Is it a happy story or does it end badly for everyone involved like 'The Fly'?

Hard to tell. If I tell you how it ends, it´ll be a spoiler.

We had one of these at school. Though sadly, because I wasn't an industrial design major I didn't get a chance to see it in action.

It just seemed like something I need to watch more closely as it develops. I just was thinking that you could email someone plastic gun parts. When these become the size of a briefcase there is going to be all kinds of mischief.

Tell me cell phones don't look like communicators.

Yes, cell phones may look like communicators but cell phones have photo and video capture features. Let that that rattle in your brain the next time the Captain asks the away team to "describe what you're seeing". hahaha.
